Staying Focused, Even When Things Are Tough
Hey there! What are you working on, friend?
I’ve got to admit, staying focused this last month has been a real struggle for me. Anyone else feel me on that??? From the election, the pandemic and the economy to stay -at-home orders, homeschooling and work-from-home… there has been so many new things thrown at us this year, it’s no wonder why I feel like a one-woman variety show most days!
Some days when I sign off from work, I leave my desk thinking, “Man, where did the day go!?!” Is anyone else as shocked as I am that it’s December already?
I started this year with some lofty goals and a lot of ambition. Quickly, things took a turn and I found myself at a standstill feeling even further from where I wanted to be.
I know that I can’t be the only one feeling a bit bewildered by 2020.
For me, I never let myself sit too long in self-loathing, pity, guilt or shame, because I know those thoughts & emotions won’t serve me. Trust me, it’s easy to get there and it’s definitely a challenge to get yourself out… however, I want to encourage you to do something, anything you can, to pick yourself up out of that funk!
Stay focused- Keep your eye on the prize- You are in the home-stretch!
I believe that so many of you are on the cusp of something great, turning a new leaf or starting a new venture. Keep moving forward!
This year looks so different. Maybe you are not where you want to be, but you are not here by accident. And you are not alone.
You were put here exactly for a time & place like today. You were given the skills, the mindset and the heart for where you are right now! I believe that everyone has a distinct talent, purpose and passion. The desires put on your heart are for a reason.
Maybe the way you will achieve your dreams will look different than what you expected. It might take you a lot longer to get to where you wanted to be. You might have to pause to re-think the situation and change direction slightly. But please don't quit!
Even though we might be at different points in our journey, we are all navigating this monumental shift & change in real-time. There is no playbook or user manual for the amount of disruption that has gone on this year.
We may still have some dark days ahead, unchartered territory might still come our way. However, we can't allow ourselves to remain stuck or set-back because of this challenging time.
We have to focus on the vision we have for our life, business or family. Sometimes the big picture seems so far away, so unattainable. Take each day, do what you can in it and with it. You might not get to the mountain top in a day but even taking one step closer is progress. You are certainly not going to get there by staying in the same place day after day. What can you to start today?
Here are a few tricks I use to keep moving forward in achieving my goals & dreams:
1.) Get some rest- I can't possibly plow full-steam-ahead on anything if I am not fueling myself & taking care of me. You can't give 100% to your dreams if you are running on empty.
2.) Talk it out- find someone who shares your same values, beliefs and mindset to share your vision with. Everyone needs a support team, especially if you are taking on something new or extremely challenging. Talking things through with someone you trust can be instrumental in getting out of your own worry & self-doubt to help you remain motivated.
3.) Keep track of your progress- start by jotting down the next few steps you need to accomplish to get you closer to what you are aiming to achieve. Put them in a place where you see them often (even daily if possible). Check-in frequently to track your progress. For some people that might look like journaling, for me I use Post-Its & a corkboard to keep me accountable.
4.) Give yourself grace- remember to be kind to yourself! At the end of the day, no matter what you have/haven't accomplished… you have to be able to take inventory and realize how far you have already come. Pat yourself on the back for the things that you've managed to get done and remind yourself that everything else will get done in due time.
5.) Then start back at #1!
